Little Black Sands Beach at Shelter Cove, CA.

  1. On the other side of the last ridge of trees shown in yesterday's photo you encounter the Pacific Ocean at Shelter Cove in Humboldt County, California. This is a great beach to walk on. The sand is black.

  2. Looks so lovely to me but I must admit that I was surprised to see the black sand. I grew up on black-sanded beaches on the West Coast of much of NZ but hadn't given it a thought where else in the world there was black sand ;-)

  3. I remember the amazing backdrop and view of the ocean when I drove down the Pacific highway from SF to LA.Would I have driven past this place?

  4. This place is part of California's Lost Coast. It is located 200 miles north of SF and has no highway access. It is about 20 miles from the freeway, down a long and winding two lane road.
    No, you would not have driven by this spot. Fortunately it is a difficult enough place to get to that most folks don't go there.
    Pristine loveliness is what they miss seeing, but we around here appreciate the lack of tourists.

  5. Oh, I appreciate the pristine loveliness of it from where I sit. It's beautiful. I'm not certain I'd want to overlook it--worth the trek for that view. *happy sigh*
