A great portrait. Can see why they're called "clown birds," though that doesn't do justice to their dignity. Dozens, in season, in the oaks on the ridge above where I live. They came to my bird feeder and were top of the pecking order. Even the scrub jays stepped back.
They peck myriads of holes in dead trees and telephone poles and fill them with acorns. You'll usually find several such trees in an area, and the birds go from one to one rather than always to the same tree until it's empty. A group project!

ReplyDeleteHow amazing to have these as common birds, woodpeckers are relatively rare over here. I think they are glorious birds
