The left and right are perfectly logical when you see the layout of the cab... the left of the picture is the front of the crane, so you move the lever the way you want to turn... the left side of the cab going backwards turns the crane left..
Here's a bit more information about the 'where' and the 'what'.
It's surprising what you can get away with if you have enough nerve - when Babs' Uncle visited us a few years back we were in a church, and he insisted on trying an ancient (unoccupied) stone coffin for size while I photographed him... can't take him anywhere. ;-)
This steam crane built in 1878 is still used today...
