Hotwells Dock

  1. The old dock at Hotwells, Bristol, was abandoned to it's fate decades ago. It's completely FUBAR, but stubbornly refuses to be washed away...

  4. A pier that goes nowhere, on dry land. Perfect image of decay, Richard.

  5. In it's former life, ships would have tied up along the length of the opposite side, but as the river is very tidal they'd only got a few hours safety unless they were planning on being grounded for a several hours at low tide. A poorly maintained or overloaded ship would likely break it's back.
Ships that were maintained in good enough condition to withstand that kind of treatment were said to be "Ship-shape & Bristol Fashion".

  6. Very compelling image. It looks sad and lonely in its disrepair. Great capture, Richard.

  8. Oh wow. Thanks for a bit of the history to it. Makes the shot all that much more ghostly in appearance.
